Great sunny weather in Tokyo this week, check out this picture taken from my living room on Xmas eve. Can you recognize Roppongi Hills on the left side and Tokyo tower on the right and guess where I live?

World smallest nativity scene on a microchip12.23.05

Integrated circuit engineers in Navarra, Spain have designed using nanotechnology the world smallest nativity scene on top of a microchip. The scene is only visible with a microscope and is 0.1mm by 0.2mm in size. You can see the scene here including a comparison with a Euro coin (the article is in Spanish).

And yet another RSS blog search engine12.23.05

Just came across PubSub, apparently it has been around for a while but I have never seen it before, it was referred as one of the “big four” in this post by Steve Rubel together with Technorati, Google and IceRocket (Technorati seems to be the one that gives the best results but I like better how the site is organized at IceRocket and some of the search features there) so I decided to give it a try.
Their home page has a box in the middle that encourages users to type a keyword or sentence that it is used to search for blogs and post on this topic. I tried with Web 2.0 spelled in different ways, space in the middle, no space in the middle, quotes, no quotes, Web or web, etc. I ended up creating like 8 subscriptions but all of them when clicked returned a page that say that “there are no results that match my subscription”. Umm., weird since the home page actually has a sample subscription called Web 2.0.. After reading a bit I learnt that this is not really a search engine but more like a RSS aggregator and it will update my subscriptions as new results are found. Will I use this service? No, thanks but no, I already get too many blogs and either IceRocket or Technorati typically do an okay job as blog search engines.

A funny post from one of my favorite bloggers12.23.05

Mark Cuban has a very funny post about Overstock and CEO’s Patick Byrne. I love this comment:

“I am short 20k shares of the stock (Which i shorted because Patrick Byrne is CEO)”

Do not miss reading the previous post he made about Overstock and Patrick and the earnings call he refers to.

Trying Gritwire12.23.05

Yet another RSS aggregator to hi the blogsphere with another impossible to pronunce name, Gritwire, I am not a big fun of Web based RSS agregators and I rather stick to the desktop ones just for the option of offline reading but this one is worth trying for the social component and the beatifully designed Flash based interface, adding Flahs to end users interfaces of rich Web applications is becoming more predominant and it can certainly do things that are complicated in AJAX plus it is 100% compatible with any browser since all run the same Flash plugin.

The IPOs of Web 2.0, being acquired by one of the GEMAYA companies12.23.05

Many people claimed that we are not in a Bubble 2.0 era because of the lack of IPOs of companies with no business model and no revenue like it happened in Web/Bubble 1.0. My theory has been that the string of acquisitions of companies without business model or revenue by any of the GEMAYA companies (Google/eBay/Microsoft/Amazon/Yahoo/AOL I think that the original acronym was started by Paul Montgomery in his Tin Finger blog and I like it very much) is the equivalent of the IPOs before and recent deli.cio.us acquisiton by Yahoo!! provides evidence in that direction. Who else is next? Six Apart? Digg? Memeorandum? Technorati?

Have I been banned from digg?12.18.05

My Internet connection works but I cannot see digg’s page anymore, I get just a blank page, this just happened as I was posting my digg experiment and the post to count registered digg users.

I removed digg related cookies from my computer but continue having the issue so I guess they have blocked my IP, pretty interesting.

UPDATE: no, digg is back, I guess I was just being paranoid, they might have had a problem with the load.

UPDATE2: definitely being paranoid, here is a post I just found in digg (isn’t it ironic?) about the digg being down for 20 minutes

How many registered digg users?12.18.05

I was curious about this after my little digg experiment so I figure out a way to see how many registered users of digg there are, just type in your browser the following URL

http://digg.com/topusers/page9999

This URL should point to page 9,999 of the list of top diggers, they list 30 per page (http://digg.com/topusers/page1 points to the top 30 users). Since there are still less than 300,000 users, it gives you a page that shows the last page of digg users, currently the page 2,744 and there you get the magic number. The trick does not seem to work using a URL with a page number with more than 5 digits.
