How many cell phones out there?

Posted in Uncategorized on Nov 19, 2005

The World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis has just released some interesting information on cell phone penetration. Italy and UK are leading the pack with 109.4% and 102.8% penetration (Spain is fourth with 93.9%) but the interesting part is that China is number one in absolute numbers with 334.8 millons but just 25.5% penetration, so huge growth opportunities are available. The US is second in absolute numbers with 181.1 millions and 61% pentration, a lot lower than European countries. Surprinsingly, Japan only has 71.6% penetration of cell phones, I thought that it will be much higher.

I am the director for Internet and Multimedia for Telefónica R&D, based in Barcelona where I managed their R&D center. I have been a bit all over the place for the last 15 years, specially in Tokyo, my favorite town, and finally came back in mid 2006 to my home town. I like everything that has to do with the Internet, computers, software and gadgets, not just the geeky aspect but also the business side. I also love reading (business essays mainly) and TV series and movies as well as having a good dinner and night out with my friends.
